Are small businesses more agile?
When I started my entrepreneurial adventure at 18, everything was simpler, there were two of us, we said to each other: "let's do this? OK, do it, done".
Many argue that micro and small businesses are more agile and faster in thinking and putting ideas and new projects into practice. But is it really like that? Or are they simply faster because they don't have structured processes and move too quickly from the design phase to the execution phase?
Have we ever wondered if this is right? Or again, do the largest companies in the world continue to be such because they "miss" the most important planning phases? Maybe not…
Production waste When factories once produced exclusively tangible products, production waste was there, under everyone's eyes, especially the factory owner, who at the end of the day would have had no problem firing, for no apparent reason, the worker who had produced more waste than the others.
In a factory that produces aluminum pans (for example) it could be aluminum powders, waste from processing.
Waste costs money. Aluminum has been bought and paid for its full weight, the more we discard, the more money it will have cost to process.
Waste 2.0 In 2018, where modern factories also produce software, what is waste?
In the world, tons of lines of code are produced per day, billions of TeraBytes for the applications and services we use every day.
Even in software production we have to deal with the problem of production waste, what are they? Applications that don't do what they were designed for, slow software that wastes a company's employees' time and will need to be rewritten, etc...
How are waste eliminated? By designing, asking ourselves the right questions and iterating in the design process until we have created our "high fidelity" prototype, that's what I call it, the prototype that allows those who have to create an object, a software, an interface, to carry out the work and complete it autonomously, having the necessary skills and all the execution information.
A dream? No, but it takes consistency and a planning method, designed to achieve the purpose.
At Host we use a "home-made" method, together with our colleagues at Welcome Italia.
We are profoundly changing our corporate culture, with difficulty but with rewarding results.
