This article aims to share with you useful information related to authinfo and the importance of verifying subjective requirements.

The authinfo is a "password" associated with each domain name which must be communicated to the domain registrant upon registration or transfer from another provider. It is personal data and indispensable for carrying out maintenance operations on the domain name, such as: changing the registrant and transferring the domain.

To become a Registrar and maintain the existing contract with the Registry, it is necessary to comply with some obligations relating to the registration and maintenance of the domain.

By signing the contract the Registrar undertakes to:

Communicate the authinfo to the registrant in a secure and confidential manner within 5 days of completing the registrant and registrar modification operations, in order to guarantee correct management. To this end, the domain registrant must be able to easily acquire the authinfo. The registrar undertakes to modify the authinfo in the event that there is a change in the registrar or registrant and in the event that the same requests the change.

Check the registrant's credentials with respect to the required operations such as registration or domain management.

Do not hinder but collaborate with the registrant if you wish to transfer to another registrar.

Carry out the cancellation of a domain name only with the authorization of the registrant, for example after the expiry date of maintaining the domain or the constraint under which the Registrar was obliged to maintain it has passed.

The obligations indicated above must not cease even in the event of any problems arising from the relationship between the registrant and the reseller, for example in the event of unpaid debts or misunderstandings between the parties.

Below, however, I would like to describe the methods for recovering the authinfo from the registrant depending on the case.

Let's start from the axiom that: the owner of the domain can request the release of the authinfo at any time.

the domain registrant is not the owner of the active product (whether hosting or DNS maintenance)

In the second case, however, the request must be sent via email from the domain registrant to our commercial contact. This email address is protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. attaching the following documentation depending on the subject:

Natural persons: photocopy of the identity card and tax code of the domain owner.

Subjects with a VAT number: it is necessary to send the request on headed paper, chamber of commerce certificate and photocopy of the front and back identity document of the legal representative. In the event that the contact has changed, the document of the new managing director visible in the chamber of commerce certificate and deed of transfer of the domain may be sent to us.

Other entities with a numeric tax code: (such as non-profit associations/bodies) it is not necessary to send us the Chamber of Commerce certificate. In the event that the president is no longer in office, the document certifying the change or association statute which shows the new name can be sent.

In case of mortis causa: it is necessary to send the death certificate, the succession deed and the identity document of the new owner.

In the event that the email address of the domain owner is no longer a valid contact, the request must also include the new email contact so that the authinfo is sent to the new address. In this way, the registrant's email contact will be updated together with its release.

Before processing the request, for reasons of transparency, we will notify the current manager of the active product of the owner's decision regarding receipt of the authinfo.

Conclusions Host.it respects the rules of good conduct indicated in the contract stipulated with the IT Registry by providing the authinfo to the domain registrant. Failure to comply with the regulation may result in the termination of the contract and cancellation from the list of Registrars. According to Registry data, in 2017 alone there were 5 canceled registrars and 23 non-compliant registrars.
