I recorded this video a few days ago and the release of the stable version of WordPress 5.0 was set for today, Tuesday 27 November 2018. However, on the official WordPress.org blog they postponed the release again to a later date, with a press release published on 11/23/2018 in which however the release of the Release Candidate was announced.
In any case, I'm here to talk to you about the main new features that will be introduced with version 5.0, let's get straight to the point.
The new WordPress editor, Gutenberg
The WordPress theme, Twenty Nineteen
Besides obviously minor changes, WordPress 5.0 is actually all about Gutenberg.
Within the WordPress Community there are different schools of thought, there are those who are for and there are those who are against Gutenberg, but why?
Integrating a layout/page builder into the core is obviously an interesting move by Automattic and many don't understand the reasons given that there are many companies that have invested and created page building plugins, which among other things are currently 10 heads above Gutenberg.
So what exactly is Gutenberg? Gutenberg started out as a transformation of the WordPress editor – a new interface for adding, editing and manipulating content.
Gutenberg is an attempt to make it easy for anyone to create rich, flexible content layouts, with a block-based UI.
All types of page components are represented as modular blocks, meaning they can be accessed from a single menu of blocks, dropped anywhere on the page, and directly edited to create the personal presentation the user wants.
This is a fundamental modernization and transformation of the WordPress experience, creating new opportunities for both users and developers. Gutenberg introduces new frameworks, interaction models, features, and user experiences for WordPress.
Gutenberg does not resemble any known editor or development system you are used to (such as in Word) and will be the only one available in a standard WordPress installation, but don't worry, if you wish you can always install the Classic Editor plugin to continue using the traditional editor
When will you be able to upgrade to version 5.0 of WordPress? We are obviously all waiting for the announcement of the new release date of the stable version of WordPress 5.0. If you subscribe to the Host Channel, I will notify you on the same day. Then, my personal advice is to use the new version to create new projects and to wait for some additional releases before upgrading from version 4. Most likely, attention will need to be placed on the compatibility of the themes, do some tests in staging before proceeding to update sites in production.
We have reached the end of this episode dedicated to WordPress, subscribe to the channel to be updated on upcoming WordPress news.
Thanks and see you in the next video.
