First of all, who can generate an SSL Certificate? Only the so-called Certification Authorities can do this, i.e. organizations that own an infrastructure called certification authority. It is simply a third party, trusted, public or private, authorized to issue a digital certificate through a certification procedure that follows international standards and in compliance with European and national legislation on the subject.

SSL Certificates are not all the same. We can group them into 3 categories:

DV (Domain Validated) SSL certificates are issued after a brief verification based on: – domain name, it must exist – owner of the domain – data entered in the request form. They are the most widespread, the cheapest and fastest to issue, in fact their issuance is practically in real time

OV (Organization Validated) SSL certificates are issued after a longer procedure which requires the Certification Authority to contact the company that must obtain the certificate and request information and documents necessary to demonstrate its real identity and existence, as a prevention against identity theft.

EV (Extended Validated) SSL certificates are issued after a validation procedure similar to that of OV SSL certificates, but in addition they have some characteristics that justify their higher cost, for example the user who enters a site with an Extended Certificate recognizes it immediately and knows that he is in a safe place. How do you see it? The address bar, usually white, turns green and shows the company name.

The latter are very expensive, even in the order of hundreds of euros per year, but extremely recommended for e-commerce sites. Recent studies have in fact found that the conversion percentage increases in the presence of the famous green bar, because the user feels safer from hypothetical scams, as these certificates are not issued to companies of dubious existence.

Which SSL certificate is best for my site? There is no real rule now, all websites must be protected by an SSL, we can find some generic suggestions, namely:

personal website, showcase website for my company, that is, a website that does not directly generate profit: for this type of site, a validated domain is fine;

if the website generates profit, such as an e-commerce, I wouldn't think twice and without compromise I would activate an extended SSL, that is, the one that allows you to have the green bar

In the plethora of companies that provide validated domains, you will find free ones, provided by the Let's Encrypt certification authority and paid ones by other historical authorities

Which Certification Authority to choose? We will talk about what differences there are between the various authorities in a dedicated video.

We have reached the end of this episode dedicated to SSL certificates, I invite you to subscribe to our channel and activate the bell to be notified when we publish new content.
