Certified Email: a business with almost 9 million accounts!

Certified electronic mail (PEC) is currently used only in Italy, Switzerland and Hong Kong and allows you to send and receive electronic mail having the same legal value as a registered letter with return receipt. Precisely this peculiarity means that the service is provided only by managers accredited by Agid (Agency for Digital Italy) who must undergo a series of periodic tests and the servers meet precise requirements, under penalty of suspension as accredited bodies.

The message transmitted is considered certified only if the sender's and recipient's inbox are PEC accounts, otherwise the system can only guarantee part of the functionality, for example the delivery receipt is not provided.

I'll explain how the transmission works specifically:

The sender composes the message and sends it via their service provider.

After verification by the manager of the sender's credentials and the formal characteristics of the message, it sends the sender the acceptance receipt containing: date and time of sending, sender, recipient and subject of the message. The message is digitally signed by the provider, this is the operation that officially certifies the sending and delivery of the message.

This is how the provider receiving the message operates whether it is the same or different from the sender:

The recipient's certified email manager receives the message and immediately checks the validity of the signature of the sending provider and of the message. If the checks are successful, the recipient's provider sends the acknowledgment receipt to the sending manager and the message is released to the recipient in the inbox.

The last operation is therefore performed by the recipient provider who sends the delivery receipt to the sender. The process ends even if the message has not yet been read.

The certified e-mail is mandatory for public administrations and companies but the convenience and the reduced annual cost have encouraged the activation trend which is constantly growing, even for private users.

Max number of recipients 500 total in a single shipment

Reception of certified and non-certified emails

Receipts of successful/non-delivery

SMTP / POP3 / IMAP protocol
