Did you know that only 15% of Joomla 3.x installations use the latest available version (3.9.4)? This means that the remaining 85% of Joomla 3.x installations use an old, outdated version (from version 3.5 to 3.8).

This data comes to us from the Joomla Statistics plugin, provided in the Joomla core starting from version 3.5. This plugin, if installed, detects information about the Joomla version installed and sends it to the Joomla.org site

These are therefore partial statistics precisely because the plugin must be enabled to transmit this information.

The numbers detected by the Joomla Statistics plugin show us the following regarding the use of versions:

The Joomla 3.5 version was released on March 21, 2016 and, since then, 32 versions have been published, 18 of which marked as Security Releases that resolved important security vulnerabilities.

Specifically, the following security releases have been published in the various versions of Joomla:

The problems fixed in the latest versions very often also concern all previous versions. In total, 66 security vulnerabilities were fixed from Joomla version 3.5.0 to version 3.9.4, 9 of which were high priority. The latter, above all, in many cases lead to the possibility for hackers to compromise the security and stability of sites with outdated versions.

The only way to guarantee the security and stability of your website is to always update Joomla and all installed extensions to the latest available versions.

We also refer to the detail of the article published on the Joomla.it website which deals with the topic, going into more detail regarding all the vulnerabilities corrected in the various versions of Joomla 3.x
