.EU domains: the new eligibility criterion is coming

In this article I will talk to you specifically about .EU domains and the news related to the eligibility criterion starting from October 19, 2019.

.eu domains are managed by the Eurid Registry (we are accredited registrars) and to date the requirements are:

natural person resident in the European Union, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein.

a company based within the European Union, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein.

an organization incorporated within the European Union, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

What changes from October 19, 2019? Starting from this date, the registration of .eu domains is also extended to the following subjects:

a citizen of the European Union regardless of place of residence.

a natural person resident in a Member State who is not a citizen of the Union.

a company / organization based in the European Union.

With this change, the possibility of registering .EU domains is thus extended. The substantial innovation highlighted is in the principle of eligibility: if up to now the criterion has been the residence of the subject, from tomorrow the acceptance requirement will also be nationality, allowing registration also to all those EU citizens who live outside the member countries.

I remind you that the registration principle does not change: domains are assigned on the basis of the "first come, first served" criterion, i.e. the date and time of receipt by the Registry of the technically complete registration request.

Below I summarize some rules for submitting a complete registration request:

Alphabet characters A-Z and numbers 0-9 are allowed

the minus sign (-) which must not be placed either as the first or last character

However, as regards the data publication policy in the WHOIS, I remind you that:

If the Registrant is a legal person, the data published is: Name, address, email contact and telephone numbers;

Technical data such as: domain status (registered, quarantine) and nameserver.

If the Registrant is a natural person, the information published is limited to the email contact and chosen language.
