.edu.it domains: the countdown is over!

The decision dates back to February 2018 and has the aim of updating and optimizing the registration process by aligning it with the domain name management policies in force in the European Union.

This provision was issued by virtue of the fact that the second level domain ".gov" identifies in the EU and USA only the central state administrations (with the exception of the United Kingdom) and not without distinction any central and local public administration, including educational institutions.

Some important rules cannot be missed:

the domain is assigned according to the chronological order of requests;

the domain is not bookable;

the registration of an edu.it domain name is permitted only to state and private schools;

the domain is assigned to the Registrant only after the applicant has indicated his/her data and accepted the conditions;

Last rule, common to all domains: the Registrant is responsible for registering and assigning the domain name, as well as for his own declarations and information provided to the Registry.

The Registry (registro.it) is the body responsible for the assignment and management of domain names within the SLD edu.it.

Registering and maintaining a . edu.it is delegated to Registro.it through accredited Registrars, like us. As with all domains, we will act as intermediaries towards the Registry for all registration and maintenance operations.

The Registrant, or the owner of the domain, undertakes to promptly communicate to the Registrar any change in his data released during the registration phase.

.edu.it domains must have a length of 3 to 63 characters and can consist of numbers and a hyphen, as long as it is not inserted at the beginning or end of the domain.

Domain registration and maintenance and modification operations are carried out in real time.

The assignment of domain names is based on the "first come first served" principle, i.e. based on the date and time of registration of a domain name.

Precisely for this reason, in the next few weeks our customer service will contact the users involved, mainly schools and municipalities, inviting them to register the desired domain and then together we will plan the migration from the current .gov.it to .edu.it.
