December 2015 – Joomla!® numbers

Where are we? Version 3 was in the fast lane and we will soon discover together which version is in pole position to close the year 2015. Last August the most used version, as shown in the graph below, was version 2.5 (by a few percentage points) and followed Joomla!® 1.5 in decline.

We took around 30 thousand sites as a sample and noted, compared to the latest published statistics, some important variations shown in the graph below:

Overtaking the Joomla!® 3 version The long-awaited moment has arrived! The credit for this success is above all yours.

This turning point is really important as community support for version 2.5 ended last December 2014, which means that no more updates or fixes will be released, not even for security flaws.

Below you will find the graph showing the trend of the Joomla!® 1.5, 2.5 and 3.x versions for the year 2015 which shows the slow but constant decline of the Joomla!® 2.5 version and the increase in the diffusion of version 3.

As regards Joomla!® 1.5, the trend is flexible, it could be the result of the acquisition of new customers who temporarily use this version and at the same time develop the migration to version 3 locally.

For those who use a version prior to 3.x, we confirm that for 2016 too, JoomlaHost.it intends to have its customers maintain all versions of the CMS, without any forced migration operations, allowing planning for subsequent versions with complete peace of mind.

I advise all those who use versions such as 1.0-1.5.x- 1.6- 1.7 and, since last January 2015, also 2.5.x for production sites to plan the migration towards version 3.4.8, which is currently stable.

Recent Joomla! version updates ® In the last few months everyone who uses Joomla!® (from version 1.5 to 3) has received an email from us regarding a very important security bug.

This bug made it very easy to upload any file to the website and JoomlaHost.it, in order to protect and inform users, decided to take various actions based on the active version:

3.x versions present on the CMS Manager: we have forcefully applied the update to version 3.4.8 which resolves the problem.

This update is exclusively for security purposes, as there are no new features or bug fixes, the update does not imply malfunctions of the site.

Some advice The growth of version 3 is constant and is a positive result also strengthened by the increasingly more requests received from our technical staff regarding the operations to be carried out to migrate your version from 1.5 or 2.5 to 3.x.
