When the Internet was born, the World Wide Web as we know it today did not exist, that is, there were no browsers to navigate the web.

Computers connected to the Internet communicated exclusively via IP addresses.

However, as the network expanded and content proliferated, users needed to be able to access these resources with names that were easier to remember than an IP address.

Domain names were therefore born, that is, easier to remember, personal names to reach a certain destination on the network.

How many types of domains are there? There are various types of domains, we can make a macro distinction between:

ccTLD, or country code Top Level Domain, identify the domain of a certain country, for example .IT for Italy, .FR for France, and so on.

gTLD, or generic Top Level Domain, the most famous of all is .COM which has always been used for commercial activities, but we find hundreds of them, in recent years extensions have been created for practically anything, from .bike to .blackfriday, you just have to free your imagination and choose the domain name best suited to your needs

But, how do domain names work? They work thanks to the magic of the DNS (domain name system), which is nothing more than a telephone book, that is, it contains the information to translate the domain name into an IP address, that is, the destination, the server to which we are connecting.

All this happens thousands of times a day, using our smartphone, browsing the Internet from our desktop. Every day we now carry out actions that for us are the result of habit, but behind a simple click, there is a world of domains, connections and DNS resolutions.

In practice, a domain is just an entry, a record within a database.
