What is a .edu.it domain?

In Europe and the United States, the .gov second-level domain is used only by central state administrations. In Italy, however, this same extension has been used by any type of administration, such as educational institutions. Italy therefore had to conform to this use and invite all educational institutions that are using a .gov.it domain to transfer it to the new born .edu.it

The domain is reserved for educational institutions, registration is therefore authorized and verified via the mechanographic code associated with the school's tax code.

For an institution that already has a .gov.it or other domain, how does the transition to .edu.it work? HOST CUSTOMERS If you are already HOST customers and only have a .gov.it domain registration with us, from September 20th you will be able to register the .edu.it domain at no additional cost and let the old domain expire.

If, however, you have a .gov.it domain associated with a hosting service with us, you will simply have to make the conversion request to our Customer Service who will take care of registering the new .edu.it domain name and reconfiguring the hosting service without any additional cost, without wasting even a minute of your time.

In both cases we will contact all our customers who own a .gov.it domain to agree and carry out the free conversion without any commitment on your part and with maximum time savings.

Possibility of maintaining the same domain name We remind you that those who already have a .gov.it domain registered and associated with an educational institution will have the possibility of maintaining the same one with the transition to .edu.it

Free registration of the .edu.it domain For the first year dedicated to this transition (until 19 October 2019) the Registro.it has decided not to charge the new .edu.it to facilitate the schools in this transition.
