How much is our information worth in the digital world?

In the digital age, who we are and how much we are worth are questions that deserve deep reflection today. Our journey into this discussion begins with a blast from the past, when information technology represented the Wild West, an uncharted, lawless territory. It was a time when visionaries in their legendary garages were about to change the world with information technology.

Then, the first networks emerged, which we had mentioned in a previous video of ours. Once again, individuals in small rooms were about to transform the world. And yes, the world has changed, and dramatically so.

But this is not nostalgia for times gone by, but rather a reflection on the value of our lives in the digital age. Consider Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Threads, which places a value of about $16 per month on each user. A value that, in our opinion, is underestimated.

Likewise, Alphabet, the parent company of Google and many other companies and investment funds, likely places a similar, if often underestimated, value on us.

Think about your connected car, which provides detailed information about your driving habits, trips and people on board. Is this information valuable?

The credit cards and debit cards we use for financial transactions extract data on our consumption habits. This data also has value.

And how much are we worth to insurance companies, who base their rates on our health, life, car or winter sports activities?

Every time we shop, we generate income for supermarket chains. How much is each of our spending points worth?

And then there's our telephone operator who asks us for a monthly fee. How much are we worth to them?

These are just some of the questions we ask ourselves, but the truth is that we often don't even know what information is being collected about us without our awareness.

Imagine being able to access all the meta-information collected by everyone else and discover every aspect of someone's life. This is what the digital world allows today, thanks to previously acquired metadata.

In light of these considerations, the traditional concept of privacy seems increasingly inapplicable. Our real life seems to have negligible value, while our digital activity has become a commodity.

We are grateful for the people and organizations who fight to respect our rights and our privacy, hoping that their commitment can lead to concrete results, rather than being a struggle against windmills.
